2016 was Incredible.

It's snowing right now in Richmond.  A lot.  8 inches of snow, in fact, and totally out of nowhere.

I can't believe it's been a whole year.  This year I've had the honor of shooting 30 weddings, racking up 176,482 shutter actuations, one of my D750s exploded minutes before a shoot, I've shot a few congressional hearings, a couple celebrities, had frisbees thrown at me, travelled the Earth with Abigail, and somehow our exceptionally bizarre dog Steinway is housetrained.

Oh, that reminds me, Abigail and I moved to Richmond Virginia this year!  Which officially makes me a Richmond wedding photographer.  No more DC traffic for us!  We bought a house and no, after 11 months there still isn't any insulation in our attic, but somehow it's still pretty cozy.  Owning a house is weird.  No one can tell me for sure whether or not it's actually a good idea.

Also, Sam Hurd and I started The Epic Podcast, which is off to a pretty great start.  Tune in!

They say 2016 was a bad year, but I disagree.

I saw 30 couples in love dedicate their lives to each other, and there's something really and truly beautiful about that.  I do what I do for a lot of reasons, but first and foremost it's because I believe that marriage is a wonderful thing.  Marriage is something that has the ability to benefit every person that enters into it.  In marriage you make a commitment to love and serve another person forever, through whatever life throws at you, and even though marriage is constantly changing, having something visual, tangible, accurate, and beautiful, to help you remember the day you made that commitment is a truly special thing.

I've been at it for almost 8 years now, and each year photography continues to surprise me by how wonderful of a medium it is at portraying emotion.  Each year I'm constantly pushing myself to improve, learn, teach, move forward.  But that's all ancillary, business-type stuff.

The real joy is in the ability to be a part of a couple's wedding day, serving them, and trying to provide for them images that evoke a true sense of how they felt that day, how it looked, who was there, and ultimately how important and wonderful it was.

I love what I do.

Erin + Woody :: North Carolina Potluck Farm Wedding

I had the honor of being part of Erin + Woody's potluck-style farm wedding in North Carolina just a few weeks ago.

It was an absolutely gorgeous day, and the joy that surrounded this couple through their friends and family was wonderful to see.

I couldn't have asked for a more amazing couple to spend the day with.  Check out the photos below!
