Men Can Stop Rape - Happy Hour at the Getaway - Washington DC Event Photographer

Men Can Stop Rape is a nonprofit committed to empowering men to restructure how culture and society views masculinity, by showing that men's strength can be used for nonviolence.  They hold happy hours in the city every so often, and this time it took place at The Getaway, a sweet bar in Columbia Heights, and it was really fun!  Most of the time was spent talking with MCSR's team members, drinking cheap beer, eating a fantastic cheeseburger (I know what you're asking, yes i took tons of pictures of it!), and enjoying the company of socially-conscious Washingtonians as a hard rain fell outside.  As the happy hour closed, Rhett + Makeda from MCSR shared some info about MCSR's mission + values, and had the whole bar do an exercise in which we had to examine the traditional "dominant" or "current" view of masculinity and compare it to the "counter-story" (read: using masculine strength for nonviolence and the betterment of society).  And it was overall just a pretty fun event that got everyone's brains turning while enjoying the company of interesting people, and I had a great time!  See the photos below!

GirlUp DC!

I had the pleasure of shooting an event called GirlUp DC on January 15th, alongside talented longtime DC photographer Max Taylor.  It was a fun event filled with speeches and interesting activities to do, an INCREDIBLE traditional African dance performed by a local High School dance group, and a few celebrities, all to raise awareness among young American girls + boys about how young women and girls around the world face serious challenges in just living day-to-day lives.  And that we typically take for granted all of the luxuries that the United States has to offer, while girls in many parts of the world don't even have a reliable source of clean water, one of humanity's most basic needs.   All in all it was really successful event and even if no one else in that huge gym learned anything, I know I did! Take a look through the photos and feel free to comment!
